The Guideline to Preserve and Inherit MoLum Plearn classical Performance of Yasothorn Province in the Northeastern Part of Thailand

Abstract

MoLum or Isan, Northeast Region of Thailand, Singing and Dancing Performance is very popular in the Northeastern part of Thailand and it can be divided into four categories as following ; 1) singing without nondrama lyric ; 2) singing with dramatic lyric, 3) the ethnic singer, and 4) the ritual singer ; however Lum Plearn is a performance pertaining the play. This study aims to 1) study the development of Lum Plearn ; 2) study the current situation of MoLum Plearn Band, and 3) study the guideline to preserve and inherit MoLum Plearn Performance. The study areas are Nong Leang Village and Kaen Yai Village, Kaen Yai Sub-district, Kam Kuen Kaew District, Yasothorn Province. The sample are selected by purposive sampling as following ; 1) singers and dancers in the MoLum Plearn Band and 2) participants in cultural preservation and inheritance. The data are collected by observation, interview, and focus group including recording by video then analyze and interpret data according to the purposes and present by descriptive analysis. The study found that 1) the development of Lum Plearn, the ancient singing, in the study areas does not show the evidence of beginning ; nevertheless it shows the relation about singing with Kaen, the bamboo and ancient music instrument of sharing culture in Asia. Later, when people believed in Buddhism around 12th Buddhist Era, it created literatures extensively both prose and verse. Especially in 20th – 24th Buddhist Era, the early singing in Isan used the verse literature as guideline to sing. In 2487 Buddhist Era, the performance was infl uenced from Likay, the Central Thai traditional dramatic performance, and developed various models of singing as well as affected by the folk tales from the Central Thai. Even though, the performance still coexistingly used Isan Folk Tales as a lyric. The music instruments as followings ; pin or Indian lute, Kaen or bamboo mouth organ, fi ddle, drum, small cymbals, and cymbals were developed by playing together with drums, guitar, and bass guitar. 2) MoLum Plearn is unpopularity in the present time because of Isan people are infl uenced by the new culture performance and lack of preservation and inheritance, and 3) the guideline to preserve and inherit MoLum Plearn Performance are collecting data from previous singers as a knowledge to preserve as well as training juveniles to inherit and  propagate via new medias.
